Hillcrest street medians (unbuilt, 1995)

Client: City of San Diego Economic Development

The Hillcrest street median project remains an unbuilt project.

Ocean islands were the whimsical inspiration for the concrete "traffic islands" shaped and terraced their natural counterparts. The suggested plantings were inspired by the many eclectic urban gardens and patio gardens within the neighborhood. Rather than relying on the standard street plant palette, the plan was to create texture by using unusual trees, grasses, succulents, and cacti planted in the recesses created within the concrete island. The concrete medians were also to include ceramic tile ornamentation.

The medians along Univesity Avenue between Vermont and Normal Streets are the unrealized original vision. The conceptual design was exhibited in "Unbuilt Southern California," Chapman College, in 1996.
